Faith No More in Portugal video, set list and more

August 9, 2009

Faith No More returned to action last night as the second leg of the Second Coming tour kicked off in one of the band’s second homes, Portugal – location of the final concert of Faith No More 1.0 in 1998. And by all accounts the gig at the Sudoeste TMN festival the gig was a cracker.

The set list saw Ugly in the Morning and Midnight Cowboy make their first appearance while Mike Patton dedicated Evidence to Portuguese football Cristiano Ronaldo, apparently in jest.

Set list:
1. Reunited
2. Land of Sunshine
3. Caffeine
4. Evidence (Portuguese)
5. Surprise! You’re Dead!
6. Last Cup of Sorrow
7. Cuckoo for Caca
8. Easy
9. Ashes to Ashes
10. Midlife Crisis
11. I Started a Joke
12. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies
13. King for a Day
14. Be Agressive
15. Epic
16. Just a Man
Encore:
17. Chariots Of Fire/Stripsearch
18. Ugly In The Morning
Encore 2
19. Midnight Cowboy
20. We Care a Lot

Check out some pro-shot video below.

Portuguese site IOL Musica gave the gig a glowing review, going as far as to say that Faith No More “are going through one of the best stages of their career”.  They also have photos and video.

It’s good that they’ve added a couple more songs to the setlist but it seems to be getting closer and closer to the standard AOTY set, which is a little disappointing to me. There are loads of older / less known songs which could really spice things up a bit – songs that have already been tested live in various tours and configurations. It would be a nice suprise to suddenly hear something like ‘Kindergarten’ in the main set or to have an encore close with ‘Why Do You Bother?’. Hell how about giving ‘The World Is Yours’ another live shot now that it’s a fairly well known song?

There are so many options but besides the occasional one-off performances of songs like ‘Zombie Eaters’ I don’t see them wanting to experiment much. 😦

I Agree to 100%!!! ..and also…”The World Is Yours” IS Absolutely One of the Better (maybe even The Best) Songs of FNM in my opinion..I just can’t be the only one who thinks that…or? ..and what about “Absolute Zero”…and how about to skip “Easy” for a while..and let “Spanish Eyes” in?? – Well..yeah..Variations are always positively for both sides! – Well, I better not be sounding too greedy here..and of course I’m Happy as long as They continue w/ the Tour! 🙂

I agree about The World is Yours!! It’s also a pity that Malpractice and Jizzlobber are excluded from the list now. Seems that the band have read those negative reviews about “yawning” audience and started delivering an “official” hit list with three covers at least (although i love them) =)

..but Goddamn…This “Caffeine” Is Really Fabulous!! – Great Sound Indeed!!

I guess we wait for the more intimate gigs. I will be at Dublin and I hope they roll out several new surpises for that – after all the crowd are 100% die hard fans – not just people who are already at a festival…

I was at the show, and I thought the energy was incredible. I think the setlists will change more and more (some songs come back, and some will appear for the 1st time), I mean they can’t give it all away right now since there’s many shows to go (Europe, South America, USA and Australia)…

I agree… There’s so many great songs they could add to setlist: ‘The World is Yours’, ‘Absolute Zero’, ‘She Loves Me not’, ‘Riccochet’, ‘Collision’ etc. I’d also love to hear ‘Spanish Eyes’ live.
Thanks for setlist and videos as always 🙂

Great link ! Many videos from the show can be seen here, I recommand it !
Especially the one were they joke about their breaking-up in Portugal 11 years ago 😉

My vote goes to them breaking out As the Worm Turns, A Small Victory, Ricochet and Got that Feeling. As far as rarer songs go…I Wont Forget You would be cool.

Does anyone know if this show was broadcast live on tv or something? Anychance of anyone uploading it on dime? Would be very much appreciated! Oh and i agree with the comments on the setlist too. Maybe even playing “I Won’t Forget You” that would work really well live too.

On a slightly different note, it sounds like the Midnight Cowboy performance was botched judging by the snippet on YouTube and the “We gotta redeem ourselves after that piece of shit” comment at the start of We Care a Lot. I wonder if they’ll try it again at some point?

      Hi David,

As much as I love to complain about setlists (which I have been doing a lot lately) I just cant bring myself to do it here. Yes I would love to hear other rarites live or how about some singles like “A small victory” and “everythiings ruined”? “The World is Yours” is one of my favorite songs! I cant complain even if FNM came on stage and played Introduce yourself 20 times and got off. I am soooo happy and hopefully I can get to see this amazing band if they come to New York instead of watching these magnificent clips on my computer. Ill continue to complain about Tool playing the same 10 song setlist for over 2 years now but I think we are all very lucky that FNM are back together and hopefully we can get a new studio album, music needs it…

It’s really funny and so fucking good to see them again !! When I saw Mikey speaks in Portuguese and jeering CR9 as he did, I felt soooo proud to be Capeverdean (a former portuguese colony).

19 days away till Rock en Seine !! No sleep till Rock en Seine, waaaaaah !!!

I’ll be there too, James, and the Edinburgh show. Nickc, I hope you get to make it to a show. I’m in the U.S. too and have been watching the clips for months, patiently awaiting my insane FNM European vacation. I wonder if anyone else is traveling to another continent to see them. I wish they wouldn’t waste time playing anything pre-The Real Thing. The World Is Yours would be amazing. I’ve always wished I could choose the setlist of my liking. Now, that’s greedy 🙂

Actually, that would make for a neat project – fan submitted set list of songs that we’d like to hear but that they haven’t played on the 2009 tour.

I know that they are sick of Falling to Pieces, but I also give another vote for A Small Victory. That was a great video and when they played it live on hanging w/ MTV in 92 Patton had a lot of fun with it at the end.

Word is they’ve been soundchecking A Small Victory so chances are very good that it’ll make an appearance at some point in the tour.

Other songs I’d like to see – Crack Hitler, Helpless, Ricochet, The Last To Know, The Crab Song, R’N’R…

In terms of REALLY rare (i.e. unlikely) stuff I’d like to see them have a shot at something like The Perfect Crime. Hell, they could play a Faith No Man song to really mess with people 🙂

FNM, obrigado por terem voltado a Portugal, preferia que tivessem feito um concerto só vosso, mas acima de tudo lamento imenso que o concerto tenha terminado… 🙂

    Abraço!
