Guardian give Faith No More at Brixton a stinker of a review

The Guardian, a paper I used to work for briefly, has posted a review of Wednesday’s Brixton gig and it is brutal. So excessively negative in fact that it has a comical quality. Sample quote: “While most of the music is terrible – with a few exceptions, these shrieking songs sound like the product of petulant 17-year-olds – Faith No More can’t be accused of not giving the crowd their money’s worth. Patton, in particular, throws himself into it.”

Amusingly, every negative review of the Brixton show I’ve seen so far has made some reference to FNM being a grunge band. I’m sure there’s no connection here at all…
LOL have you SEEN Carolyn Sullivan? WHY send that woman to review a FNM show. She looks like she would be better off at a Barbara Streisand show.
BEST SHOWS EVER!!!!!! All the nay sayers who were against a reunion have been proven wrong.
FNM have lost nothing over the years and gained a passion lacking from the AOTY tour. With the experience of solo careers to add to the mix, and the rejuvenation of a decade + apart, and now pulling thousands of fans to shows and realising they STILL have that appeal and support, they are, quite possibly better than ever!
Nobody on earth has a voice that stands up to Pattons live. Time and time again, crooning or growling, or making noises only heard in some sort of fisher price torture chamber, he does it all perfectly everytime!
There is a reason faith no more were a seminal band of the nineties. None of the music has dated. And it still influences bands today.
They are, as they always have been, epic.
I get it she must have been watching Faith No Man (the tribute band) and mixed up the date of 10th with the 7th and the venue Brixton Academy, London with The Vic, Coalville

Lets break this review down a bit:

Patton, in particular, throws himself into it. 4, After a genial greeting (“What’s going on, fuckheads?”), 5, he applies a Grand Guignol approach to each number. Growling, cackling and despairingly dropping to his knees, he works himself into a fine frenzy, 6, and it’s even more fun when he brings out a megaphone during Land of Sunshine. 7, By the end, his vocal chords must be in shreds.
1, As I stated she was at the wrong gig.
2, Most of the early stuff was written by a petulant 20 year old!
3, Always have always will.
4, Must be talking to her then.
5, Is this not why the fans went?
6, It was fun 🙂 (wait till she reviews tomahawk with the gas mask!!!)
7, Guess not, I watched them tonight.
Faith No Man are a pretty accurate tribute mate. Hardly fair to slate ’em.

They really don’t know what the fuck they’re on about.
It’s funny how the people who dont pay dont enjoy , At the pheonix festival in 93 , which to me was the best show i’d ever see up till that point . the reveue in kerrang slated them . i dont know what he was wathching but it were’nt the same as me . and i wathched the download gig last night , and with a bit more tweaking and a few more gigs and they will be back to top form .
I too was at the Phoenix 93 gig. Kerrang actually gave them a glowing review it was RAW and a few others that really slated them.
What used to really get me was Kerrang were really two faced on their opinion of the band. One week they were amazing the next they were shit. Then when they broke up they became the best band of the 90s

My god, the Guardian should have sent someone who knows what they’re talking about or just no one, so some real fan could have gone instead. What a waste of space!

Caroline Sullivan of the guardian newspaper is obviously a tool. But then the guardian newspaper is rubbish anyway. This is a prime example of the problems in the music industry, these people are the ones who comment on a shows quality. Everyone at the show had a great time, its a show for faith no more fans and she obviously isn’t one. The only people who are going to go to these shows are the fans, who will enjoy the experience. I love how out of the hundreds of people that enjoyed the show (some even going so far as to suggest it might have been the best show they have been too), she publishes a article that says they stunk. She fails to justify her opinion and as far as I am concerned it just goes to show her substandard journalism. People like this who are continually promoting the ‘new thing’ are bound to have this sort of response, and this is why there is so much bad music out there is the world, because these idiots are put in a position to promote it and run their mouth about anything they don’t appreciate or understand.
She seems predisposed to disliking them from the start – the whole review seems geared to building towards the “droll” punchline of:
“And there’s another plus: the gig does end, eventually.”
What I can’t believe is that they couldn’t find someone at the Guardian who would’ve jumped at the chance to see Faith No More (free or otherwise).
i’m glad stupid broke whores like her don’t like or “get” FAITH NO MORE. in my opinion, a bad review from the guardian is like a winning medal. fuck those pretentious cunts in their stupid faces.
FNM FOR LIFE
With a face like a bashed crab, I’m sure this woman never gets laid, and her moodiness shows.
If you look at her review history, the last show she was impressed with was Lady Sovereign in April, winning 4 out of 5 stars.
Enough said.
When I first read this review of my favourite ever band’s first gig in 11 years, whilst sitting in the sun at Download Festival (oh yes, I saw them there too), I was enraged.
I thought “how dare she say these things and how dare they send somebody to the gig who obviously isn’t a fan, never was one and never ever will be!”
After I calmed down, it occurred to me that Mike Patton and the rest of the band would absolutely *love* the fact that this very stupid, uptight woman hated their music – and this is what we must think too.
The gig at Brixton was absolutely amazing, as was the one at Download, and I still can’t quite believe that Faith No More are back!
I first saw Faith No More live in 1992 (also at Brixton) and I can honestly say that if anything they are tighter and more passionate now than they were even then.
I was devastated when they broke up in 1998 and they have more than made my year by reforming.
Pretentious po-faced jaded old moose. If you don’t like a band then please explain why, like an adult, instead of simply resorting to sarcastic purile insults aimed at a band (you evidently have no idea about FNM and don’t ‘get’ Mike Patton) as if you’re a ‘petulant 17 year old’ 😉 BTW, you’re NOT 17 anymore Caroline, so stop trying so hard to impress said age group by jumping on the latest fashionable bandwagon ala Jo Wiley and being obsessed with ‘cool’ and ‘trendy’. You just appear sad.
Such lazy ill-informed writing too..she uses phrases like ‘grunge assault’ and is over-reliant on giving bands labels/genres, which sums up her ignorance in the context of this ‘review’ – she obviousley does not have a clue about FNM/Mike Patton, so she resorts to cliches and petty criticisms. There is something very patronizing and condescending about the way she describes Mike’s performances espeically, as if she’s witnessing something beneath her (incidentally, I think it’s a long time before she’s had ANYTHING beneath her!). When in other reviews, like the 4 star (out of 5) U2 review, she can admit to getting off on U2 ‘rocking out’ (her words) to their new material like..er..”get on your boots”..indeed. Well, Ms Sullivan, you “get on my t*ts”!! (My purile insults are justified – i’m just being on your level!! lol 🙂 )
Anyway, the fact that you went to a FNM gig at Brixton and were evidently the only person there who didn’t enjoy it means you DON’T have a pulse..’SURPRISE!! YOU’RE DEAD!!’ 🙂 I’m sure the “sweaty tattooed men” you no doubt looked down on at the FNM gig could teach you a thing or too about how to have fun in life, you cold fish.
Caroline Sullivan, the poor old thing. Now now you bad people leave her alone. She was clearly out way past her bedtime. She’s clearly been skipping her beauty sleep! Her review was pathetic, as are all her reviews. She has a very warped grip on good music. I mean she likes Razorlight!!
Faith No More are the best band out there and who really gives a toss what Ms (there’s no way she’s married) Sullivan thinks. She’s just too pseudo cool for school and the rest of us grew up a long time ago.
Don’t waste your anger on the likes of her or the very pretentious Guardian…..keep it for the Michael Jackson fans and ‘believers’!
I have to say that I think the Download audience wasn’t as good the Brixton one. Faith No More – metal festival??? I mean I had to listen to Limp Jaffa Cake!!! WHY!!!?

Look at her photo and her profile description: “Caroline Sullivan (…) a few weeks ago narrowly avoided being trampled by a herd of cows, which would have amounted to the least rock’n’roll death in history…”
She has to be a joke….
Whether she’s funny or not, that’s another subject.
